Trip Info

Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal, sitting inside Rara National Park in Mugu district, in the far west of the country. The lake covers about 10.8 square kilometres and reaches a depth of around 167 metres. It sits at 2,990m, surrounded by pine, spruce and juniper forest, with the Chuchemara and Ruma Kand ranges behind it.

This trek gets far fewer visitors than Everest or Annapurna, mainly because reaching it takes more effort. Most trekkers fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then Nepalgunj to Talcha airstrip, and walk two to three hours from there to the lake. You can also go overland by road through Surkhet and Jumla, or trek in from Jumla over three to four days if you have more time and want a longer route through the Sinja Valley.

This itinerary uses the flight route with two full days at the lake, and keeps a spare day built in for flight delays, which are common on this sector.

Highlights

  • Nepal's largest lake, with water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue through the day

  • Sunrise from Chuchemara Danda, with Rara Lake and the surrounding peaks laid out below

  • Rara National Park, home to red panda, Himalayan musk deer and over 200 recorded bird species, including the Danphe, Nepal's national bird

  • Scenic short flight from Nepalgunj to Talcha, over the Karnali hills

  • Pine, spruce and juniper forest around the lake, with far fewer trekkers than the main trails

  • Sinja Valley extension option, the old capital of the Khasa Malla kingdom and the place where the Nepali language is believed to have developed

  • Basic teahouse stays in Mugu villages, with home cooked Nepali meals

Important Notes

Flights between Nepalgunj and Talcha are small aircraft and depend on clear weather. Delays and same-day cancellations happen, more often in winter and monsoon. This itinerary includes one buffer day for this reason, and you should be ready for your trip to run a day or two longer if flights are affected.

There is no ATM once you leave Nepalgunj, so carry enough Nepali rupees in cash for the whole trek.

Electricity and wifi are limited to a few lodges around the lake and cannot be relied on.

Rooms and toilets in Mugu are basic. Hot showers are not always available.

Nights at the lake are cold in all seasons. A sleeping bag rated to at least minus 10 degrees Celsius is recommended even in spring and autumn.

If your return flight is delayed, extra nights, meals and any rebooking cost are not included in the trip price.

Best Time To Go Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) for stable weather and clear mountain views

Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner included on trek days. Meals in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj are on your own unless stated.

Best Time To Go

Spring and autumn give the clearest skies and the most stable flights.

Permits & Documentation

Rara National Park lies inside a national park, not a restricted area, so a normal park entry permit is enough for the standard route to the lake. A TIMS card is also required. A separate restricted area permit is only needed if your route goes further north into upper Mugu, close to the Tibet border, which this itinerary does not.

Rara National Park Entry Permit: NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals (about USD 23), NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals

TIMS Card: NPR 2,000

Mugu Restricted Area Permit: only required for routes into northern Mugu, not for the standard Rara Lake trek

Permit rules and fees can change without notice. Your guide will confirm the current rate before you travel.

Fitness Level

Fitness Level This trek stays below 3,000m for almost the whole route, so the altitude risk is lower than treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. The walking itself is moderate: forest trails and gentle climbs, nothing technical. Anyone who can walk 4 to 6 hours a day on uneven ground, with a few closer to 6 to 7 hours, can do this trek. Regular walking or hiking beforehand will make the days more comfortable. No previous high altitude trekking experience is required.

FAQs

Yes. The route is well used by local guides and the trail itself has no technical or high-altitude risk. The main safety factor is flight reliability to Talcha, which is why a licensed guide who knows the route matters more here than the walking itself.

Flying in and out of Talcha, 5 days from Kathmandu, is realistic, though it is worth keeping a day of flexibility afterward in case of flight delays. Trekking in from Jumla through the Sinja Valley instead of flying adds 3 to 4 extra days.

Yes. You can go by road from Kathmandu to Surkhet and on to Jumla or Gamgadhi, then walk in from there. It takes longer, roughly 2 to 3 days of driving before you start walking, and part of the road is rough, but it avoids the risk of flight cancellations and costs less.

You wait for the next available flight, which can be the same day or the next, depending on weather. Any extra nights, meals or rebooking costs during a delay are the trekker's own expense, and the rest of your itinerary shifts back by however long the delay lasts.

Yes, in terms of walking difficulty. Trail days are moderate, at low altitude compared to most Himalayan treks. It suits first time trekkers who are reasonably fit, though the remote location and flight uncertainty make it less predictable than a first trek like Poon Hill.

Nights are cold in every season because of the altitude and open lake setting. Spring and autumn days are pleasant, but temperatures can still drop below freezing overnight. Winter nights regularly go well below minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Yes, with a licensed guide, which we require for this route regardless of group size given how remote Mugu district is. Villages along the way are small and used to hosting trekkers, and a guide who knows the area and the flight situation makes a real difference on this particular trek.
