Trip Info

The Badimalika Temple Trek is the least explored trek of high altitudes in Nepal. This

trek starts in Bajura District in far western Nepal and goes towards the Badimalika

Temple located at 4,219 meters above sea level, passing through alpine grasslands locally

called 22 Patans.

This trek does not have any teahouses on the trail like other popular trekking destinations

like Everest and Annapurna Region. There are no tea-houses available for

accommodation here and camping facilities are needed.

Reasons why people do the Badimalika Trek:

  • Large alpine meadows and open landscape

  • Very few trekkers

  • Api, Saipal, and hills surroundings

  • Religious importance of Badimalika Temple

  • Beautiful wildflowers covered grasslands in July & August

Now that there are better roads connecting Dadeldhura and Bajura, the trek can be done in

only 8 days. But traditional trek routes take up to 12 to 14 days.

Important Notes

This trek is 100% camping only and there are no fixed tea houses along the way.
Landslides and weather can affect vehicle movement.
The months of July and August are when flowers bloom in the wild, although rainfall is expected at this time.
October and November yield clear mountain scenery and favorable weather conditions.

Trip Itinerary

Customize Itinerary
The day starts with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi,
taking approximately 1 hour. You will be able to enjoy spectacular views of the
Himalayan mountains located on the left side of the plane.

Upon arriving at Dhangadhi airport, you board a private vehicle for a drive lasting 5 to 6
hours to Dadeldhura, gradually ascending from the hot plains of Terai into the cool
middle hills of Nepal's western part.

Dadeldhura is a regional capital, providing good accommodation facilities and
restaurants. Staying overnight at this location decreases travel time during the next day's
drive and also enables acclimatization due to altitude increase.

Flight duration: 1 hour
Drive duration: 5–6 hours
Overnight elevation: 2,090 meters
Max altitude 2,090 m Meals: B, L, D
It's going to be a long and scenic overland journey to your trek starting point. The route
passes through Sanfebagar, Mangalsen, Martadi, and other little hill settlements.
Sometimes, the route may appear very difficult during monsoons but can easily be
traversed by 4-wheel drive vehicles.

As we advance towards Bajura District, the scenery gets more remote. Jadanga is also a
small village, and one of the practical starting points for Badimalika Trek.

Upon arrival, the trekking team sorts out the necessary trekking equipment and gears up
for their first day of trekking.

Drive duration: 7–9 hours
Overnight elevation: approximately 1,200 meters
Max altitude 1,270 m Meals: B, L, D
The route starts with a moderate climb amidst diverse vegetation, agricultural fields, and
settlements. The people living here rely on animal husbandry and farming, making it a
great experience to learn about rural Nepal’s lifestyle.

The hike gets tougher after midday as one approaches Budha Krodh, a typical camping
site for trekkers and pilgrims.

Water supply is abundant at the campsite, and there are hardly any visitors around during
the night.
Walking duration: 6–7 hours
Overnight elevation: 2,263 meters
Max altitude 2,263 m Meals: B, L, D
It is considered the most picturesque day in the journey. The forest vegetation slowly
changes into the ridge and the high altitude grassland. You will start seeing wider vistas,
and the legendary 22 Patans will appear as you ascend.

This section comprises gently undulating alpine grasslands instead of steep mountain
valleys. Between July and August, the area becomes covered with wildflowers. During
the autumn season, the weather remains clear, and you can see the peaks of Api and
Saipal.

Bhitachhina is a wide-open camping site with panoramic views during sunset and sunrise.

Walking duration: 6–7 hours
Overnight elevation: 3,667 meters
Max altitude 3,667 m Meals: B, L, D
This is a relatively easy trek through high-altitude pasture fields. The terrain consists of
gradual rises and falls, with panoramic views all along the way.

Tribeni is a holy spot where three rivers converge. This is a convenient stopping point for
trekkers and pilgrims who are heading to the temple of Badimalika Temple the following
day.

The trek is shorter, which will allow you to take some time to rest, roam around, and get
ready for the next day’s trek.
Walking duration: 3–4 hours
Overnight elevation: 3,870 meters
Max altitude 3,870 m Meals: B, L, D
This is the most important part of the trip. You leave early in the morning and walk
gradually up to Badimalika Temple, which stands at an altitude of 4,219 meters. The
temple is devoted to the goddess Bhagwati and is considered one of the most sacred
shrines in western Nepal.

At the top, there are extensive views across the valleys and snow-capped mountains
beyond. This region is characterized by an unusual openness typical of Nepal with many
flat areas that stretch far into the distance.

After visiting the temple and photographing the surroundings, you descend to Dhalpuri
Pokhari, a serene campsite situated next to a small alpine lake.

Walking duration: 7–8 hours
Highest elevation: 4,219 meters
Overnight elevation: 2,556 meters
Max altitude 4,291 m Meals: B, L, D
The route gradually drops to the nearest road head through farmlands and forests. The
vehicle can pick up the party depending upon the state of the roads.

Upon reaching the road head, you travel further by jeep to Martadi or any other village
within its vicinity.

This is the conclusion of the trekking phase of the trip.

Walking duration: 4–6 hours
Jeep drive: 2–4 hours
Max altitude 1,438 m
You leave at an early hour for the lengthy drive to Dhangadhi. Once you arrive, you take
the afternoon or night flight to Kathmandu.

Your trip concludes with a much better appreciation of one of Nepal’s most isolated and
least commercialized trekking areas.

Drive duration: 8–10 hours
Flight duration: 1 hour
Max altitude 1,324 m Meals: B, L
