Trip Info

A 10-day journey into one of Nepal's least-visited national parks, established in 1984 and still largely untouched by tourism infrastructure. The trek combines wide alpine meadows, sub-tropical-to-temperate forest, and a genuine wilderness experience with a living religious site: the Khaptad Baba Ashram, where the hermit-saint Khaptad Baba meditated for 50 years. The route runs from Dhangadhi through Silgadhi and Jhigrana to the Khaptad plateau, well off any established trekking circuit.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) give the clearest skies and easiest walking conditions on the meadows and forest trails. The full moon periods in July and August draw Hindu pilgrims to the Khaptad Baba Ashram to worship Lord Shiva at Triveni, so those windows carry religious significance alongside the trekking season, though trails can be wetter from monsoon rain.

Religious Significance of Khaptad Baba Ashram

Khaptad Baba was a spiritual teacher who lived in meditation here for five decades before his death in 1996; the national park takes its name from him. His ashram, along with the nearby Triveni (confluence of three rivers) and Sahasralinga, remains an active pilgrimage site. Visitors are welcome to walk the same grounds regardless of faith, but this is a functioning religious site, not a tourist attraction, and should be treated accordingly.

Remote Trek Practicalities

Khaptad sees very few trekkers each year, which is the appeal but also means limited infrastructure. Teahouses are scarce past Silgadhi; most nights on the plateau are spent in dharamsala-style lodges or organized camping. A national park entry permit and a registered guide are required. Build in flexibility around the Dhangadhi-Kathmandu flight, which is weather-dependent and can be delayed.

Highlights

  • Trekking through one of Nepal's most biodiverse and least-visited national parks

  • Visiting Khaptad Baba Ashram, Triveni, and Sahasralinga

  • Wide alpine meadows and old-growth oak and rhododendron forest

  • Exceptional birdwatching, far from any crowded trail

  • Genuine off-the-beaten-path experience in Far Western Nepal

  • Optional overlap with July-August full moon pilgrimage season

Important Notes

Accommodation past Silgadhi is limited to dharamsala lodges or camping; this is not a teahouse trek in the Everest/Annapurna sense.

The Dhangadhi-Kathmandu return leg is a short flight but weather-dependent; build a buffer day into your travel plans.

July-August full moon dates bring pilgrim crowds to the ashram area specifically, not the wider park.

A national park permit and government-registered guide are mandatory; independent trekking in the park is not permitted.

Mobile network coverage is minimal to non-existent for most of the trek.

Best Time To Go

FAQs

The standard itinerary is 7 days from Kathmandu back to Kathmandu, including flights and the overland approach to the trailhead.

A spiritual teacher who meditated in the region for around 50 years; the national park is named after him. His ashram is still an active pilgrimage site today.

It's rated moderate, no technical climbing, but several long trekking days and a remote, infrastructure-light route mean some prior trekking experience is recommended.

Primarily during the full moon in July and August, when Hindu devotees gather to worship Lord Shiva at Triveni.

Primarily during the full moon in July and August, when Hindu devotees gather to worship Lord Shiva at Triveni.

Both are off-the-beaten-path treks in Far Western Nepal with a religious dimension, but Khaptad centers on a national park and meditation site, while Badimalika is built around a Shakti Peeth temple. Many trekkers pair the two as a Far Western Nepal combination.

Not in the standard sense. Past Silgadhi, accommodation is mostly dharamsala-style lodges or organized camping.
