Trip Info
The Tinjure Milke Jaljale Trek (TMJ Trek) is one of the most scenic and least explored trekking paths in the east of Nepal. Situated within the districts of Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, and Taplejung, this trek provides the hiker with an opportunity to venture off popular trails such as those in Everest and Annapurna.
This area is commonly referred to as the Rhododendron Capital of Nepal since there are over 30 species of rhododendron on the trek route. This place is especially colorful during spring (March – May) when the hills are full of flower blooms, making it one of the most colorful treks in Nepal.
The TMJ trek involves walking up the ridge that links Tinjure, Milke, and Jaljale. It features trekking through the forest, villages, and meadows and enjoying vistas of the Himalayas. Tinjure Danda and Milke Danda provide panoramic views of various Himalayan mountains, among them Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kumbhakarna.
Other distinctive features about this trek are the rich culture surrounding it. This trek passes through areas where the Rai and Limbu people reside, thus offering an insight into their culture, cuisine, and way of life.

Trip Itinerary
Customize ItineraryYour journey begins in the morning from Kathmandu, as you head out on the BP Highway and later move towards Dharan, ending up in Basantapur. The road quality consists of paved highways to unpaved and bumpy roads through the countryside.
After leaving the bustling city behind, you will be greeted by the green rolling hills, rivers, and farmlands. As you move ahead, you will encounter many small towns and local markets.
In the evening or early night, you will reach Basantapur, which is a small hill town with tea houses and simple hotels. If you are lucky, the Himalayas will make their first appearance.
Overnight: Teahouse in Basantapur
From here, the trek officially commences. It entails an easy climb up via a staircase trail with forest pathways. You pass through a forest containing pines, oaks, and rhododendrons.
As you climb higher, you start feeling cooler due to fresh air. Passing through some communities, the terrain is relatively gentle in this region, allowing you to adapt to the surroundings.
There will be no distractions during this stopover as there are only few teahouses. Enjoy peace in Chauki with the opportunity to interact with nature intimately.
What to Expect:
Moderate uphill walking
Forest trails
Scenes of mountains in the distance
Overnight: Teahouse in Chauki
The trail becomes scenic from now onwards. The journey ahead includes passing through forest ridges that are populated by rhododendron trees. In the spring season, this stretch is very colorful.
After hiking for several hours, you come across Gupha Pokhari, which is an idyllic high altitude lake that is enclosed by the hills. This location holds cultural significance, particularly among Hindus who come here for pilgrimage. It is tranquil and vast and provides panoramic views during clear weather.
What to Expect:
Dense forest walking
Gradual elevation gain
Spiritual and peaceful environment
Overnight: Teahouse near Gupha Pokhari
It is one of the most enjoyable days during the journey. The walk is done through a ridge trail, which implies that you will have scenery on either side.
The forests get thick, and biodiversity becomes more pronounced. This stretch falls in what is referred to as the rhododendron belt of Nepal. In case you are trekking in spring, then this will make you feel like you are walking through a natural garden.
Milke Danda approaches, and you can begin enjoying the scenery since there are some prominent peaks such as Makalu and Kanchenjunga visible.
What to Expect:
Ridge trekking (scenic)
Dense and biodiverse forest
Increasing mountain views
Overnight: Simple lodge near Milke Danda
Get up early to catch the sunrise view. It is one of the most breathtaking views during the whole trek.
Once you are done having your breakfast, you move ahead on a trek towards Jaljale via the ridge. You will mostly be moving in absolute silence with nature surrounding you in this part of the trek. It involves gradual ups and downs without being physically tiring.
What to Ecpect:
Sunrise mountain views
Quiet and remote trail
Open landscapes and Forest areas
Overnight: Local teahouse
Today’s journey consists of a gradual descent. You descend from the ridgeline and make your way to lower villages.
The path goes through the forests, farmlands, and villages that are native settlements. You would encounter more of the local community in the form of farmers, kids, and villagers at work.
Chainpur is a bigger town in comparison with earlier destinations, where there are better facilities such as stores and lodges.
What to Ecpect:
Long downhill walk
Cultural experience
Warmer climate
Overnight: Lodge in Chainpur
After having breakfast, you start the journey towards Kathmandu from Chainpur. First, the drive will take you through a hilly area until you reach Dharan and then you connect with a highway leading to the capital city.
It’s a long journey, and you get to experience the last bit of the landscapes in eastern Nepal before reaching the end point of your trekking adventure.
Note: You can take a flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu for faster and more comfortable travel.
