Solu is the southern half of Solukhumbu district, the lower, road-accessible part of Nepal's most famous mountain district. Khumbu, the northern half, is where Everest Base Camp and Sagarmatha National Park sit, above 5,000m in places. Solu stays between 600m and 3,000m, mostly forest, farmland, and Sherpa villages, and it's where trekkers went before the Lukla airstrip existed.

Before Lukla's airstrip was built in 1964, every Everest expedition, including Hillary and Tenzing's, walked in through Solu from Jiri. That route still exists and still works, it's just no longer the fastest way in.
